Pointy toes, Mary Janes, Loafers, & Ballet Flats: Prefect prep is our Winter shoe vibe

2007 called and boy oh boy does it have the shoes for you (well, this season at least). From the rumblings of Miu Miu’s Ballerinas, to the resurgence of Chanel’s lambskin flats, the whispers of the return of Prada’s Mary Janes, and the staying power of Manolo Blahnik’s iconic Maysale mules - we knew it was coming. But this season, the call for preppy pumps is extra strong (just like that double-shot long black you keep trying to switch for matcha) and we hate to say, we’re here for it. Lingering hostility aside (if we could just erase those $29.99 cardboard Rubi flats from our memories we’d be good, thanks), we have found ourselves tirelessly trawling for the finest after-school specials to adorn our soon-to-be-cool Autumn toes. If you find yourself similarly afflicted, save yourself a few hours (read: days) on TheRealReal with the best we’ve found from Prada to Zara….

The shoe of the year (or so we’re told), the ballerina has been having a moment for a little while now but this season proves it’s more than just a passing fling (or something only Zoe Kravitz can get away with). With commitment on the cards, make sure to select a pair that will work with your wardrobe rather than against it. A good trick is to work out three outfits you’d wear them with before putting your card down and don’t forget - when it comes to elongating, a little toe cleavage never hurt anyone.

1.PORTE & PAIRE Bow-embellished Satin Ballet Flats $324, 2. AEYDE Delia 25mm Leather Pumps from Farfetch $495, 3. ZARA Leather Ballerinas with Bow Details $69.95, 4. AEYDE Uma Ballerina Flats from Ssense USD $290, 5. MIU MIU Satin Ballerinas $1,370, 6. ZARA Satin Ballet Flats $59.95, 7. ROUJE Coline Ballerinas EUR $250.

Loafers. They look easy enough but they’re notoriously tricky to get right (actually in our case, they pretty much always look just that little bit wrong). Our advice? Go as close to flat as you can (for your first pair at least), pick a polished black leather (not patent and not matte), and make sure they’ve got a bit of weight to them. Get it right and they’ll add insouciant yet polished androgyny to every outfit.

1. PRADA Unlined Brushed Leather Loafers $1,700, 2. TONY BIANCO Livia Black Hi Shine Shones $229.95, 3. AEYDE Black Ruth Loafers from Ssense USD $375, 4. SENSO Met Ebony Loafers from Dissh $265, 5. ROUJE Dorothee Loafers EUR $260.

Now this is more our wheelhouse. A nod to the flats we all wore with our low-rise boot cut jeans (see: The Hills, Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls), this season’s pointy-toe pumps are something to have fun with. Go vintage (or vintage-adjacent) if you can for some unexpected flair.

1. ZARA High-heel Leather Slingback Shoes $139, 2. MANOLO BLAHNIK Bellerimu Leather Point-Toe Mules from Net-a-Porter $1,215, 3. PRADA Brushed Leather Slingback Pumps $1,730, 4. MANOLO BLAHNIK Maysale Suede Kitten Heel Mules $1,275, 5. ACNE STUDIOS Slingback Shoes $880, 6. TONY BIANCO Shae Blossom Suede 8cm Heels $199.

Your school shoes reincarnate, this season’s Mary-Jane’s are all about the flirt. Whether flat, feeled, strappy, or heavy, they’ll bring every outfit into the now with subtle come-hither charm. Our thoughts? While we’re partial to a kitten heel, we’re going flat for a chic no-priss option we can get our moneys worth from.

1. PRADA Triangle Logo Leather Slingback Pumps from Farfetch $1,730, 2. THE ROW Ava Shoe in Leather USD $790, 3. SAM EDELMAN Michaela Mary Jane Flats from Nordstrom $206, 4. SANDY LIANG Mary Jane Pointe Shoe USD $495, 5. AEYDE Black Roberta Mary Jane Oxfords from Ssense USD $370, 6. ZARA Block Heel Shoes $99, 7. TONY BIANCO Loure Vino Hi Shine 6.5cm Casual Shoes $229.95.
